Long Island Sound

A large estuarine embayment between Connecticut and the glacial bluffs of Long Island's north shore1, open to the Atlantic in the east and narrowing westward toward New York. In the narrow western Sound, waves are fetch-limited and run larger under easterly winds than westerlies2, and bottom waters turn hypoxic most summers3.
